In Jeremiah 6-7, we see a picture of arrogant people. God tries to purify them with trials but rather than shed the impurities, they lean into it; the Bible says that they are like copper with lead and that rather than the lead burning off, they call themselves rejected silver - hoisting themselves to a higher status than they are and blaming God for rejection.

In chapter 7, we see what this looks like in practical terms. The people were following after things of this world and then returning to the temple to worship. Just as Jesus says, you can only have one master (Matt 6:24). We should be willing to allow ourselves to become pure through trials, knowing that it produces character ( Rom 5:3-5). We use them to draw closer to God.
