In Daniel 1, we see where Jerusalem is sacked by the Babylonians. For three years, the young nobles are trained and among them are four: Daniel and the three from the fiery furnace - Hananiah/Shadrach, Mishael/Meshach, and Azariah/Abednego. The three, during their reeducation, were given the kings food to eat. They declined saying it would defile their bodies (meaning it was likely unclean food). The guards found them favorable and, after a 10 day trial period, found them more fit than any other trainee. They accommodated and only gave Daniel water and veggies. We, too, can trust that God will protect us if we only have the courage to ask. These men likely felt powerless, defeated, like a guest (or prisoner), and frightened, yet they held their guns and God rewarded them by being favored by the trainers
