Bent but not Broken
Heb 4:12 - the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any sword, dividing souls and spirit, judging the thoughts and attitudes of the heart
The process of Scripture learning helps you become more like Jesus by
- Experiencing him
- Extracting knowledge
- Encouragement from Jesus’s life
- Exercising it in life
Luke 13:10 - woman bent over for 18 years is healed in a sabbath
- She was at the synagogue - disease didn’t get in the way. She needed it more than ever
- Jesus saw the need and immediately called her. She could not help herself so he met her where she was. Jesus shows compassion in this way
- God simply touching us lifts the burden that breaks our backs that we may stand tall again
- When rebuked for healing on the Sabbath, Jesus responds “don’t you loose your ox on Sabbath so it can drink? How much more should a child of Abraham be loosed of disease in a Sabbath”
- The pharisee sees her as a distraction but Jesus sees her as a daughter
Application
Three decisions:
- I will intentionally help when and where I can
- Don’t be a pharisee
- Be involved
- See opportunity not obligations. Possibilities not problems
- I will give what I have
- God doesn’t ask you to give what you don’t have or offer someone else’s possession
- 2 Cor 9:7-8 - help me be a cheerful giver
- I won’t give attention to others if I want all the attention on me. The days you want it to be all about you are empty days anyway
- I will lift up others
- Notice the people that are bent over and lift them up, just as Jesus lifted you up
