In 1 Samuel 1-2, the story of Samuel’s birth is recounted. Hannah, his mother, was a barren wife in completion with a wife who had multiple children for their husband. She prayed to God for a son who she would make a Nazarine, that is, one who is under the Nazarite vow. She prayed so passionately that a priest thought she was drunk. God answered her prayers and she returned with her son to the temple, giving him to the care of the same priest, Eli. She then praises God’s name and returns year after year with new clothes for her son as he grew. She later has more children as Eli prayed for her to have more to replace the one she surrendered to the service of God.
