According to Judges 11-12, Jephthah the Gileadite lead Israel only after first being cast aside by his brothers, as his mother was a prostitute. Eventually, his brothers came to him for help defeating the Ammonites. He responds with the all-too-human “oh so you want me now that you need me.” Their response is to offer him the role of king. He does ultimately defeat the Ammonites but makes a vow to God that the first thing to walk through his door when he gets home he would offer as a sacrifice. He is harrowed when his only child and daughter greets him with song and dance - the first to exit the home. He remains faithful to God and offers her.

Now, we know God does not like human, especially child, sacrifice so how is this ok? Ultimately, he placed this curse upon himself. Personally, I think God used this to teach him to remain humble and avoid making foolish views that he wouldn’t keep. I do not think that he actualWhile no follow up is given, we know that he continued to rule for six years.
