Jeremiah’s Almond Branch Vision

In Jer 1, a vision is given in which Jeremiah sees and almond branch. God tells him this is because he wants to see his word fulfilled. This makes no sense in English but in Hebrew, “almond branch” is SAQED (h8247). In Hebrew, “watching” is SAQED (h8245). This is a play on words. Something like this in English: “don’t forget to record your records on the record player.” All three words sound similar in English but mean different things. In Hebrew, there are no vowels so this would be written much the same as the above sentence. The vision given to Jeremiah was supposed to be a simple visual reminder that God is recalling his promises.

The word of the LORD came to me: “What do you see, Jeremiah?” “I see the branch of an almond tree,” I replied. ¹² The LORD said to me, “You have seen correctly, for I am watching to see that my word is fulfilled.”
