Hebrews 5 explains that Jesus was not made a high priest on earth because he was not subject to such weakness as they are. A high priest deals kindly with the people, and offers sacrifices on their behalf because of sin. Jesus, on the other hand, is perfect and the son of God. Therefore, he is high priest after the order of Melchizedek, not the Levites. He is our sacrifice, he doesn’t just offer one. He chooses to deal kindly with us but his judgement is righteous as he is perfect.
This harkens firmly back to Ps 110. In that Psalm, Jesus is portrayed both as God and the one who sits at God’s right hand. He is awaiting the day that he may conquer his enemies and God calls him a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.
