In Hebrews 12, the author describes the mountain on the day the 10 commandments were given. It was shaken heavily, lit on fire, and any animal or person who touched it was to be killed. Likewise, we now approach the new covenant in a similar way: our God is a consuming fire and we should treat him with reverence and sober mindedness. If touching the earthly warranted death, consider twice before crossing Jesus.
That said, we see in Psalms 114 how the land kept with joy when the people entered. While God demands a way to approach him, he does truly love us and rejoices in spending time with us.
The picture of mt Sinai is one of a “hoopa” or a marriage covering - similar to a gazebo. Under it, the marriage contract was signed. In our case, that was the giving of the law and the people answering, “all you have said, we will do.”
