Being strong and courageous is a theme echoed all throughout scripture. We see it in:

  1. Deut 31:6-7
  2. Deut 31:23
  3. Josh 1:6-9
  4. Josh 10:25
  5. 1 Chron 22:13
  6. 1 Chron 28:20
  7. 2 Chron 32:7
  8. 1 Cor 16:13

We see in Revelation 21 that cowards are listed among the sinners, being people who quickly turn from God, spineless. We should be meek, not weak. The weak are cowards but the meek inherit the earth (Matthew 5:5, Psalms 37:11); be a warrior in a garden not a gardener in a war; do not react, act.

What the scriptures are saying is to know the time and place to destroy the wicked but choose to keep the sword sheathed (unlike Peter in John 18:10-11). This is not weakness, it is strength. Recall that the tongue is a sword; so we should exhibit self-control not just of our body but of our words, for words come from our heart and can defile us.
