In Exodus 34, God tells Moses to write the stone tablets a second time. This time he has him carve them himself instead of God doing it for him. When Moses approaches again, God defines himself as compassionate, gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in love and faithfulness. He also defines himself as a jealous God who will not tolerate idolatry.
