In Joshua 9, the Hivites of Gideon deceive Joshua and the Israelites by pretending to have travelled from far to the east to worship the God of Israel with them. A deal is made - after little prodding - and they become allies. Upon finding out, Joshua confronts them but cannot go back on his vow. Rather than destroy them as God had wanted, they had to settle for making them servants to Israel. There’s a chilling verse (14) that simply states that God was not consulted.

Josh 9:14 ESV So the men took some of their provisions, but did not ask counsel from the LORD.

Many of the descendants today live in Mexico and Guatemala.
