I’m Numbers 31, we see a pattern set forth, the last contribution of Moses. The spoils were to be split 50/50 between those who did the actual fighting and the rest of the community. Of the half that was given to the “doers,” 0.2% was given to God directly and of the remainder of the community, 2% was given to the Levites. All of the metal was to be melted and purified. All of the items which couldn’t be melted were purified with water. Those who had been in war were separated, according to the normal laws of death, for 7 days.

For us today, we can apply the same concept. When we go out to battle and the Lord joins us, we should share in that victory with our community, keeping slightly more than they, and ensure that God gets his share of the praise. We should remain humble in how we arrived at that place of triumph and rejoin only after a period of introspection, prayer, and communion with God. We should refine ourselves and allow ourselves to be purified, never becoming puffed up, that we may be fit for further use by God soon.
