In 2 Samuel 24, David sends out his men to get a count of all fighting age men. When he hears the count, he is conscience ridden. The next dawn, he hears from God that he will be punished for trusting in his own strength. God would send David’s choice: 3 years of famine, 3 months of fleeing from enemies, or 3 days of plague. David responded that he trusted in God’s mercy, so a plague was sent.

At the end of the three days, David builds an alter on a threading floor, insisting he pay as an offering must cost something.
