In 1 Samuel 24 and 25, we are given two examples from David’s life that show how we should deal with vengeance. In the first, David had the opportunity to kill Saul, yet did not, even at the prompting of his men; Saul was still the appointed king and David still his servant. Vengeance for the wrongdoing would need to come from God.
In the second account, David approaches Nalan, the man for whom they’d watched sheep in the past. Him being a cantankerous man, he spurs their request for food and sends them away empty handed. Luckily, his wife - Abigail - speaks with David and reminds him of God’s will on David’s life. He is jarred back to his senses and spares the man. Ultimately, he does less than two weeks later; the LORD had avenged David.
We could all use an Abigail in life. One who reminds us of our higher calling and that pulls us back when we want to take action before allowing God to speak. Slow down, hear God, then take action.
