In Numbers 20, a story is recounted wherein the Israelites complain that they have no water. Previously, (Exodus 17) Moses was instructed to strike a rock so that water would be given to them. This time, God instructed Moses to speak to - or declare - the rock. Rather, Moses strikes the rock twice. Water still pours forth but God tells he and Aaron that this lack of trust would be punished by them no longer entering into the promised land.

In 1 Corinthians 10, Paul discussed this story and reveals a hidden truth: Christ was the rock. Jesus was sent first to be stricken. The next time he comes, he will defend with a shout. Both times, rivers of everlasting life come from him. Just as it says in Colossians 2, the feasts and everything given to us in the Old Testament was present as a shadow picture - something that isn’t the real thing but shows us the shape and movement of the real thing. The rock in the wilderness was given as a shadow picture and Moses striking the rock a second time destroyed this picture. God did not take that lightly.
