I’m Leviticus 20 and 21, we see commandments given to the priests. God has personally anointed them to the ministry and, as such, holds them to a higher standard. For example, they are to only touch dead bodies of those very close to them within their blood family, no spouses even. Similarly, the high priest is not to leave the temple ever. He also commands that this can never be something they loathe. Why so harsh? Well, just as 1 Peter 1:16 states, we are to be holy as He is holy. Holiness is a state of being set apart from what is common, it essentially means “special.” We should cherish this gift and strive to maintain that state. God wants us to draw near to him by emulating his actions and character. While I don’t think these rules apply today to any except those within a functioning temple - of which we do not have - I do think we can learn from the principle. We are to be a kingdom made up entirely of priests and God’s plan is that we all be holy.
