In Leviticus 25 and 26, God lays out his exact plan for us if we are faithful to him or if we turn away. Likewise in Deuteronomy 7 and 8. In the case of faithfulness, he fights our battles, gives us so much that we can’t even use it all, and protects us from things impacting everyone else. If we turn away, however, he gets progressively more angry, allowing disease, wild animals to attack us, other nations to conquer us, and ultimately says he will pile our lifeless corpses on the very idols we prayed to. God then reminds us that all of this is up to us. He says that if we turn away but then realize our sin that he will welcome us back with open arms. There will still be punishment but he will return us safely to him.
This is reiterated later in Deuteronomy 28-30 where he ends with “today I set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Therefore, choose life!”
