In Leviticus 27, God lays out the way in which things should be redeemed from him, in the same mindset of redemption comes the commandments of tithe. That, to most Christians, is an odd concept. Does that really mean that we have to buy back our tithe, I thought it was a gift to God? Yep. Everything belongs to God and, in fact, keeping our tithe is robbing God of what is his. When we return our tithe to God, he uses it to build up his kingdom and bless you in return. Just as the first born of Israel were protected from God by the blood of a lamb in the doorpost, so too must we redeem the first of everything back from God if we wish to keep it, and that includes our paycheck. If we do not buy it back, and we are found guilty, there is a price to pay that will make 10% look like nothing. Give God what already belongs to him and allow his blessings to flow through you!

In the new testament, Mark 12:13-17, Jesus clarifies even further stating that we should “render into Caeser that which is Caesar’s and render into God that which is God’s.” This is a King James way if saying “pay your taxes but also, God owns all, give him his portion back.’ in both cases, the money is not framed as belonging to you; rather, it belongs to the king - both earthly and heavenly. This reiterates the idea that tithe is not us giving a gift but, instead, us returning to God that which was already his.
