In Joshua 7, we find the story of Achan. When God gave Jericho to Israel, he told them that this city was not to be plundered, as it was the first fruit for Him. However, Achan took for himself a beautiful robe, roughly 2.5k of silver. He hid this in his tent. God called him out and he was ultimately stoned to death as a result of his disobedience.
Remember, tithes are not us giving God something that he doesn’t have. Rather, a tithe - or a first fruit of our wages - is returning to God what was his to begin with and recognizing that it belongs to him and not us. Keeping it for ourselves will always have consequences. While they may not be as extreme as shown in this story, there are countless stories of people who trust God in giving of their little only to be blessed with much within a month. Somehow, God always makes sure our needs are met.
