The people Jericho trusted in their walls, their own strength.

An angel (messenger) appears as a man to Joshua as the children of Israel approach. Joshua asks if they stand for them or Jericho and the angel responds that he is on neither side, but stands with God as the commander of the hosts of heaven. He then encourages that if they join Him, God will fight for them (Joshua 5). This is a lesson for us: side with God (Psalms 20:7, Joshua 24:15) and then we can live out the bumper sticker that “God is for you.” (Ps 56:9). He sides with the angel and is given the directions for how to wreck Jericho. He then follows the (kinda crazy) orders immediately, in faith. Marching around the town for seven days with seven priests blowing their trumpets and on the seventh day, marching seven times.
