In 2 Peter 2:21, Peter echos what Jesus said several times: that it is better to have never known God and been made righteous than it is to have known God, been made righteous, and then scorn God. That is, turning away is so much worse than never knowing. Jesus says as much when I proclaims that any who did great works - literal miracles - in His name but ignored The Weightier Matters have no seat in heaven.
To me this, this is a chilling challenge to us as Christians. God holds the people who never knew any better as innocent but those that knew better are guilty of every last sin.
