In 2 Peter 1, we are reminded to constantly reflect on God’s grace, which is an empowerment that God has given us to live a righteous life. Specifically, we are charged to remember that Peter speaks not of his own interpretation but as a prophet, one who witnesses and testifies to that which God himself says. His reminder is this: that we should strive to attain perfect love by first adding to our faith, with that will come goodness. If continued, knowledge will come. If pursued, self-control follows and, with it, perseverance. When we persevere in our faith, we attain godliness, that is “being like God.” Through reflecting God, we will find that we mutually love everyone, and ultimately understand true love for the world, God’s heart. This is what is required to truly be effective for the kingdom. He then charges us that not doing these things is nearsighted and ultimately scorns God and the gift he gave us.
