1 Samuel 8 and 9 gives us a clear example in seeking God’s Council. Just as Jesus met with God regularly, Samuel only did as he was told by God. When the people approached asked for a king, his heart broke for God. God told him this rejection was of Him, not Samuel, and agreed to give them a king. He then gave clear instruction to Samuel on the next steps, in advance. Samuel trusted God and took action so that he was prepared when Saul arrived hungry, lost, and unsuspecting.
This is the life we should strive for: One of total obedience to God and one marked by constant connection to our Father. We should emulate Jesus, and Samuel, in their faith, obedience, and heart to speak with God before anyone else. Have you prayed today? If so, did you spend some time listening to God or did you just spout off a list of complaints and desires?
