In Mark 12, we get a good glimpse at what the resurrection entails. The Sadducees attempt to entrap Jesus in a question about resurrection - as they themselves held that there is no resurrection of the dead. Jesus answers their questions with pity over their lack of understanding. He essentially boils it down to two points:
- When resurrected, we are a completely new life, not a raised version of our past selves
- Our new bodies, and lives, will not resemble our earthly lives so far as marriage. We will not marry nor will our last marriage (or life in general) be upheld. Rather, our sole love will be God and everything we do will be focused around showing him our love.
Our lives on this side of eternity are to train us for the life to come. We should strive to live a life solely focused on where God would have us be. Marriage, in this life, is to allow us to become even more complete in that mission - filling in gaps where we may have them and furthering our reach. Marriage, even in this life, is not supposed to be self-serving; it should be about partnering with someone on the same path as you and becoming one with them so as to love God even more than you could alone.
Divorce, then, is only given to us as a result of sin. That is, what is unified was never supposed to separate but because we suck at choosing, and people can change dramatically, God allows us an “out” so that we may not be yoked to someone entangled in sin.
