Do not envy sinners

In Psalms 73, David shows a moment of weakness that I can relate to: the envy of the sinner. In my view, those who do not know God are not judged for that lack of knowledge and those who do know are judged according to how they judge. It can be easy, then, to see salvation as a burden. What’s the point in choosing more responsibility? Why do they get to have it easy? Would it be better that I never knew? These are valid questions but dangerous and not well reasoned. David reminds us that this life is like a dream. When God wakes up, the wicked people (those that are not saved) are viewed like a nightmare. They’re despised and tossed aside, actively forgotten. Those that are saved are raised to life with him, not left behind. We should not envy the wicked, we should pity them. Sure they have it easy now but this is all they’ve got! We should aim to live a life “as long as the trees” as spoken about in Isa 65, where living to 100 will be considered young and dying before that will be viewed as a curse.

Prov 24 ¹⁹ Do not fret because of evildoers or be envious of the wicked, ²⁰ for the evildoer has no future hope, and the lamp of the wicked will be snuffed out.
