Intro
Ps 119:18 Open my eyes so that I may see the wonderful [hidden] things of your law.
“Wonderful” (pala, H6381) can also mean “extraordinary,” “difficult to understand” or “beyond grasp”
Jdg 13:18 ESV 18 And the angel of the LORD said to him, “Why do you ask my name, seeing it is wonderful?”
Teaching
John 4, God seeks those who live worship by spirit and truth
John 6, while speaking to Pharisees, Jesus says that eternal life comes after eating his flesh and drinking his blood. Many disciples leave after this.
The spirit gives life, the flesh counts for nothing.
In the garden
From the beginning, God showed us a pattern: Adam and Eve. A woman comes from man as bone of bone and flesh of flesh. Just as Adam is the shadow of Jesus, Eve is the shadow of the Church. We will one day be - and should strive toward being - bone of his bone, flesh of his flesh, spirit of his spirit.
The serpent deceives Eve by saying she will be like God
They then hide from being face-to-face (Panim, H6440) from God
God places a flaming sword that slashes in all directions to prevent anything from drawing near the garden (Gen 3:24)
Cain and Abel
Gen 4:16 Cain leaves God’s presence. This indicates that, despite being out of the garden, God is still nearby
Pharaoh
God proclaims that HE is god (Ex 20:2-3). No other gods before me (panim, H6440, same word as what Adam and Eve tried to flee in the garden)
God did all of the acts against Egypt so that it would always be in the forefront of the people’s mind.
Sinai
Moses, then, walks right into God’s presence.
“Everything God has said, we will do” (Ex 24:3)
The tabernacle was designed to allow God to be back in the presence of the people, but it must be made exactly how he demonstrates (Ex 27, Num 8)
God places a curtain between the Holy Place and the Most Holy Place. Recall that the curtain is right behind a flame and has pictures of cherubim on it. God is still “in the garden,” still protected by angels with flaming swords
The curtain is torn in half when Jesus dies. There is no longer separation from God’s presence. It is torn from heaven to earth (top to bottom)
Mat 27:51 ESV 51 And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split.
